The criteria for the 3 speech competition programs - Career Recognition, New Careerist, Personal & Professional Development - has been updated to support the 3 legs of our mission statement:  to build powerful women personally, professionally and politically.

 

Pursuant to new legislation, all homeowners receiving the Basic STAR exemption must register with the New York State Tax Department in order to continue to receive the exemption beyond 2013.  The registration period is open now, and it runs through December 31, 2013.  I highly recommend you go to this link right now, and register for your exemption.

One of our most important civic rights is the right to vote.  On Tuesday, September 10, 2013, primary elections will be held across the State for a variety of offices.  In many places, there will be elections for mayors, council members, sheriffs, etc.  No matter how small the race seems, your vote is important.  Voter turnout in primary elections is notoriously small.  This means that races can be decided by a handful of votes.  Makes sure the candidate you support wins by getting out and voting.

Has your Chapter made your plans to observe our annual event yet?    Many Chapters may already  have a full schedule already developed for 2013-14, but even if you have a fully developed program, there is still time to incorporate some of the suggested programming into your October Chapter meetings.  Posted on the website you will find information and ideas for holding an event,  as well as a camera ready ad Chapters can use to publicize New York State Women in Business Month this October.

This year’s goal for the Nominating Committee will be to pursue nominations from the entire membership for the 2014-2015 Election. Please take an active interest in mentoring and endorsing prospective candidates for office this year. Official Nomination Forms PDF

A recent Pentagon report indicated that there is an epidemic of sexual assaults within the United States Armed Forces, with an estimated 26,000 assaults last year, an increase of more than a third from 2010. In response, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who became chairwoman of the Senate Armed Services Personnel subcommittee this year, and Senator Barbara Boxer have introduced legislation that would remove sexual assault cases from the military’s chain of command.

Women’s Day at the NYS Fair is happening on Wednesday, August 28th. The links are up on the NYS Fair site, NYSFAIR.org. NYS Women, Inc. will be participating in the Mini-Fair. This is a great opportunity to promote who we are and what we do. Promotional materials (postcards and buttons) and the opportunity to become members that day are planned. Make sure you stop into the pavilion to check us out between 10 am and 4 pm.

At its June meeting, the Bay Ridge Brooklyn Chapter of New York State Women, Inc. awarded scholarships to two Brooklyn women attending CUNY colleges. In line with the goal of supporting professional development for women, the Chapter annually awards a scholarship to a Brooklyn resident who is attending college within NYC with preference given to candidates who are working women or those who have returned to school.

Michele Iannello-Ward received the seventh annual “Effective Leadership Award for Women in Business” at the meeting of the Grand Island Professional Women’s Chapter, New York State Women, Inc.
