New York State Women, Inc. stands firmly in support of the Paycheck Fairness Act co-sponsored and supported by you and many others in Congress.  Enough is enough with the discrimination that women have withstood on the issue of Pay Equity.  There is no rational explanation for the length of time it has taken us to achieve this goal.  The mission of NYSWI is “to build powerful women personally, professionally and politically” through advocacy and education.  Our vision is “to make a difference in the lives of working women.”  Our Legislative Platform reflects the many areas of equitable demands and we are supportive of any issue that will positively impact the lives of women in New York and all of America.  There is no justification for women to be treated as second-class citizens.

Women’s history in the Empire State goes hand in hand with New York’s history as a progressive leader. From education to health care to civil equality, women have been a driving force behind almost every reform movement in our state. This past week, in honor of Women’s History Month, Governor Cuomo opened a new exhibit at the State Capitol honoring the remarkable women who have led New York and the nation. Explore our online exhibit featuring these women’s stories.

Looking forward to next year, I am seeking out the many talented members in our organization to join Team 2012! Thank you to those who came forward at the March meeting and agreed to Chair or Vice Chair, Standing, Special and Sub-committees. I challenge others now to step out of your comfort zone and consider Chairing/Vice chairing a committee next year. Positions open as of this writing are Nike Business Manager, Resolutions, Personal and Professional Development, Legislation, Strategic Planning, among others. So, if you have an interest (make that a passion) and are willing to share your talents, please contact me-I know you are out there. Speaking of next year, please, please, please consider joining the team by serving as Treasurer or Secretary. Speaking personally, serving on the Executive Committee has been such a rewarding experience for me, that I wholeheartedly encourage you to consider serving one of these positions and joining the team!

Our March Board Meeting, March 2-4, 2012, at the Radisson Hotel, Corning, NY, was ably hosted by District VII, is presented more opportunities for members to express their ideas and opinions and vote on changes to our bylaws and structure. We successfully welcomed at least 16 young women to our Youth Leadership Program, a program designed to provide high school students with knowledge and experiences that will expose them to opportunities and challenges that they may face in their future.

A joint congressional resolution designated March as Women's History Month. New York State Women, Inc. adopted the Women's History Month Award at the 1990 Board Meeting, in an effort to make our members and their communities more aware of the contributions women have made, and continue to make, throughout history.

Local chapters are urged to record their events with photos, press releases and any notes taken on events and activities. These will be used to prepare their scrapbook for the Annual Women's History Month Competition, with the winning scrapbook to be announced at State Conference.
