November is Native American Heritage Month - What started at the turn of the century as an effort to gain a day of recognition for the significant contributions the first Americans made to the establishment and growth of the U.S., has resulted in a whole month being designated for that purpose.

The proposed revisions to the bylaws were presented at the Board of Directors Meeting and Special/Member Meeting on October 13, 2012 and were approved.

The Grace Legendre Endowment Fund, Inc. is pleased to announce its 2013 GLEF Fellowship competition open to New York State women enrolled in graduate study for a masters or doctoral degree at colleges and universities throughout New York State.

At the upcoming Board of Directors’ meeting October 12-14, 2012 in Niagara Falls, NY, there will be a “Special Members’ Meeting” to act on several provisions of the bylaws. We will discuss our Board of Directors’ structure to determine if there are any changes warranted.

Women’s Day was Wednesday August 29th, 2012 at the NYS Fair. There were 24 women from NYS Women, Inc in attendance (130 total). The topic, “DeClutter and Simplify Your Life”, by Deb Cabral, the DeClutter Coach was well received. The morning program, “Battling the Silent Killers of Women”, by Freida Weeks and Leisha Tedford, confirmed how important it is to look after ourselves. The morning and luncheon speakers’ universal theme of our health is timely.  Cheryl Lavin, Director of the Women’s Building, arranged a very large luncheon (marvelous dessert), decorated the room, obtained Women’s Hall of Fame material and provided great coordination. Local television personality, Liz Ayers, introduced the dignitaries in attendance including the 25th District Congresswoman, Anne Marie Buerkel and Syracuse Mayor, Stephanie Miner.

New York State Women, Inc. New Careerist Program is a mentoring program wherein the Chapter recognizes a member or potential member who meets the criteria as a Candidate to the Speech Competitions and develops a mentoring partnership with another member or members to develop the public speaking skills necessary to compete at a Chapter, Region and State Speech Competition.

The Grand Island Chapter awarded Nathalie Winder the 2012 Professional Women’s  Scholarship. Nathalie attended Grand Island High School. She received the Rochester Institute of Technology Computing Medal and was nominated for and awarded a four-year partial scholarship to attend RIT. She will use this scholarship and the two Grand Island scholarships to attend RIT’s fall semester.
