Description of Presentation My first program is entitled Women of WWII: On the Front Lines & the Home Front and involves research I did in writing my first historical novel, On The Homefront. Here's the description of the program: During World War II, American women took on many new roles, both in the military and as civilians. Beyond Rosie the Riveter and the Atomic Girls, women made incredible contributions to the war effort. One of the civilian avenues was through the American Red Cross Clubmobile program, which was essentially a mobile club, featuring doughnuts, coffee, and good old American girl-next-door friendliness, all served up at the front lines in Europe, Southeast Asia, India, and Australia - wherever the troops were to be found. Learn more about the Clubmobile program and all the ways in which American women helped win the war! My second program is entitled Women of WWII: Serving soldiers at the Whistle Stop Canteen and involves additional research I did in writing my 2nd historical novel, The Whistle Stop Canteen. Here's the description of the program: After Pearl Harbor was attacked, American troops started traveling across the U.S. for recruitment, induction, training, and deployment. Most servicemen had never been far away from home and certainly not on an over-crowded troop train, destination unknown. You may have heard of the Stage Door Canteen or Hollywood Canteen, where celebrities offered food, dancing, and entertainment to our servicemen. But the real surprise came at train stations all across the country, such as North Platte, NE, Dennison, OH, Reno, NV, and Connellsville, PA, where local women, children, and senior citizens sacrificed their own food and ration stamps to provide a morale boost to hungry, homesick, and frightened soldiers. Come learn about how the Greatest Generation pulled together to help our troops.
Additional Information Janet Carey contacted me about speaking at your annual conference last June, but I had a conflict. I have given 125+ programs for libraries, historical societies, book clubs, writing groups, and women's clubs in IL, IN, WS, MI, NY, GA, & VA. I recently spoke at the Seneca Falls Historical Society, the Wood Library in Canandaigua, and the Geneva History Museum to rave reviews and have spoken for several area groups, including the NYSWOMEN group in Penn Yan, Tompkins County Public Library, Fairport Public Library, The Schuyler County Historical Society, and the Skaneateles Public Library. I"d be happy to provide you with names if you'd like to speak to any of the program coordinators with whom I've worked. My Bio: Barb Warner Deane is the award-winning author of four published novels and a public speaker on the topic of American women in WW2. Barb graduated from Cornell University and the University Of Connecticut School of Law. Barb, her husband, and family lived in the Chicago area for thirty years, other than two years in Frankfurt, Germany and two years in Shanghai, China, but have recently moved home to the beautiful Finger Lakes area of New York. In addition to writing, Barb is a genealogy buff, loves to read, is a fan of all things Harry Potter, and is crazy for both U.S. and international travel. Now that she and her husband are empty-nesters, she’s making plans to expand on her list of having visited 47 states and 42 countries on 6 continents.
