NYSW is posting a RFP for Legal Services PDF

A recent Pentagon report indicated that there is an epidemic of sexual assaults within the United States Armed Forces, with an estimated 26,000 assaults last year, an increase of more than a third from 2010. In response, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, who became chairwoman of the Senate Armed Services Personnel subcommittee this year, and Senator Barbara Boxer have introduced legislation that would remove sexual assault cases from the military’s chain of command.

Women’s Day at the NYS Fair is happening on Wednesday, August 28th. The links are up on the NYS Fair site, NYSFAIR.org. NYS Women, Inc. will be participating in the Mini-Fair. This is a great opportunity to promote who we are and what we do. Promotional materials (postcards and buttons) and the opportunity to become members that day are planned. Make sure you stop into the pavilion to check us out between 10 am and 4 pm.

At its June meeting, the Bay Ridge Brooklyn Chapter of New York State Women, Inc. awarded scholarships to two Brooklyn women attending CUNY colleges. In line with the goal of supporting professional development for women, the Chapter annually awards a scholarship to a Brooklyn resident who is attending college within NYC with preference given to candidates who are working women or those who have returned to school.

Michele Iannello-Ward received the seventh annual “Effective Leadership Award for Women in Business” at the meeting of the Grand Island Professional Women’s Chapter, New York State Women, Inc.

The Falls Region Chapter of New York State Women, Inc. held its annual scholarship dinner on June 19.  This year the chapter awarded two high school scholarships to two Judson Falls High School seniors.  One of the scholarships was in memory of Kathleen Butterfield, who was a former president of the local chapter.

Where we stand at the end of the 2013 New York State Legislative Session - In his January 2013 State of the State address, New York Governor Cuomo introduced a 10 Point Plan for Women’s Equality, the Women’s Equality Agenda.

How will we retain members and encourage new members to join? Do you have an idea you’d like to share? Each month this column will contain a Membership Tip – and ask you to give it a try and let us know how it worked. It will also highlight a Local Chapter who will share an idea, program or practice that works for them. As programs and membership information is developed, those details will also appear here. Retaining and attracting members needs everyone’s help.

Erin Taylor-Tolcott, of Owego, New York, shared top honors at the New York State Women Inc. annual conference on June 8, 2013 with her presentation in the annual Career Recognition speak-off and competition. Erin, an athlete and race walker, is a member of the Susquehanna Chapter of NYSW, Inc. and holds a Masters Degree in Music Performance from SUNY Stony Brook.

On June 8, 2013, Roberta Hayes, of Staten Island, New York shared top honors at the New York State Women, Inc. annual conference with her presentation in the annual Career Recognition speak-off and competition. Roberta has a PHD in Microbiology & Immunology and is an Assistant Professor at St. John’s University on Staten Island. She is also a member of the Richmond County Chapter of New York State Women, Inc.
